Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was introduced to the arts from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of that art can be an activist vehicle. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her to make use of the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma to later direct a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. In the year 1990 she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still in the college. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of a jury member's home. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999.
